Safety

Always in safe hands

For class-leading safety functions, Mirai is built with T-Mate – a series of systems designed to support you and make driving safer. Whether you’re on the motorway, in the city or parking, with T-Mate you’re always in safe hands.

Toyota Safety Sense
  1. Toyota Safety Sense
    1. Mirai at a junction in the city
With you for a safer journey
T-Mate is a series of systems designed to support you and make driving safer, whether you’re on the motorway, in the city or parking. These systems not only protect you and your passengers, they work to keep other road users safe, too.
    2. Pre-Collision System (PCS)
Pre-Collision System can detect and help you avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorbikes. It works by alerting the driver with audio and visual warnings and brake assistance. If the driver doesn’t manage to brake in time the brakes automatically engage to prevent or mitigate a collision. Additionally, Intersection Collision Avoidance Support and Emergency Steering Assist support in the day when turning at junctions and making evasive manoeuvres.
    3. Dynamic full range cruise control (DRCC)
This system keeps you at a minimum pre-set distance from the vehicle in front. If this distance falls, the system reduces your speed and eventually the brakes will be applied and brake lights activated. If your car is equipped with Road Sign Assist (RSA), this system will also recognize speed limits on your driving route and suggest any necessary adjustments.
    4. Emergency driving stop system (EDSS)
If the system detects no driver input for some time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If no further inputs are detected, EDSS brings the vehicle to a gradual stop while keeping it safely in lane. Hazard lights are activated to warn other road users, and doors are unlocked to allow emergency services easy access if required.
    5. Proactive driving assist, deceleration assist (DA)
This system supports smooth deceleration when the accelerator pedal is released, when approaching a curve or a preceding car.
    6. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates
OTA software updates ensure Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is up to date with latest features and improvements.
    7. Mirai parks on a city street using Panoramic View Monitor
  2. Driver aids
    1. Mirai parks on a city street using Panoramic View Monitor
      Panoramic View Monitor (PVM)
Panoramic View Monitor combines images from four cameras for a 360° view of your surroundings, so nothing is out of sight – even when manoeuvring in confined spaces.
    2. *Depending on model
      Teammate advance park
This system controls the acceleration, steering, braking and gear shifting* to help you park safely. It can even memorise your favourite parking spaces that aren’t defined by lines or adjacent objects.
    3. Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
This system uses a camera located above the steering wheel to monitor a driver's alertness and condition. A warning is delivered if the system detects an abnormal status, such as fatigue. These inputs are used to enhance the performance of the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) through earlier detection of inattentiveness.
    4. Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Automatic Braking (RCTAB)
When you’re backing out of a parking space, this system will identify any vehicles approaching from the left or right, alert you to them and apply the brakes to help to avoid a collision.
    5. Safe Exit Assist (SEA)
This system uses the Blind Spot Monitor radar to help prevent a collision between an occupant's opened door and a vehicle or cyclist approaching from behind. If there is a risk of a collision, indicators illuminate on the outer mirrors and multi-information display, together with an audible buzzer to alert occupants.

Frequently asked questions

Battery Electric vehicles are powered by a battery and one or more electric motors, and must be charged when the state of charge runs low. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric vehicles produce their own electricity through a chemical reaction in an onboard fuel cell stack, and are refuelled with hydrogen at a filling station when required. Hydrogen vehicles offer impressive performance and convenient long-distance mobility since refuelling is often faster than charging. .

The Mirai can be driven up to 650km* on a full tank, using only 0.79kg of hydrogen per 100 km. It’s an enticing glimpse into Toyota’s vision for clean mobility and a future hydrogen society.

*WLTP cycle. Range subject to selected grade, powertrain and local driving conditions

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric vehicles aren’t charged in the same way as a Battery Electric car. Instead, they’re refuelled with hydrogen gas pumped in the same safe and familiar way as a conventional petrol or diesel model. Filling up takes the same amount of time, too – as little as 3-5 minutes for a full tank.

With similar fuel and insurance charges, the running costs of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric cars are comparable to those of conventional petrol or diesel cars. However they often qualify for a range of government incentives, from company car and road tax discounts to exemptions from congestion zones.

When it comes to longevity, each fuel cell stack is engineered to last the lifetime of the car. And with the peace of mind of a 100,000km warranty, Toyota’s take-back scheme ensures that when the fuel cell stack nears the end of its life, it can be reused for other purposes or dealt with safely and responsibly.

Hydrogen is safer to handle than petrol or diesel. Toyota has spent many years testing its hydrogen-powered cars in extreme conditions and temperatures to ensure they can be used as safely and reliably as any other model. Toyota’s multi-layer hydrogen tanks are extremely well protected. The result is true peace of mind for drivers.
